Document Scanners for Document Imaging

A document scanner is the primary component used for most document imaging projects. Scanners come with widely varying capabilities. For example, desktop scanners come with capacities of 10 to 30 pages per minute, departmental scanners with 30 to 60 pages per minute and production level scanners with over 60 pages per minute.

You have to evaluate the features of scanners available in the market and determine which one of these meets your specific requirements.

Scanners are typically compared on the basis of features such as:
  • Page size such as 8.5x14 inches for most desktop scanners and 12x18 for production level scanners
  • Feeder capacity such as 25 or 50 sheets common among desktops and 500 to 1,000 among production levels
  • Interfaces to the computer such as USB 2.0, SCSI, Firewire, or Ethernet
  • Speed such as one-sided speeds of 10 to 30 pages per minute for desktops and 75 to 200 pages for production levels
  • Daily scans that are recommended, such as 500 or 1,000 pages for desktops, 5,000 or 10,000 pages for departmentals, and 60,000 or 200,000 pages for production levels
  • Resolution such as 200, 300, or 600 dpi (dots per inch)
  • Simplex (one-sided scanning) or duplex (dual-sided scanning)
  • Features such as Rescan (for better image quality), Multi-feed detection (are two pages being fed?), Color or B&W, Mac Compatibility, etc.

Depending on available features, desktop prices can range from $300 to $3,000, departmental scanners from $1,500 to $7,000 and production scanners from $15,000 to $75,000.

Significance of Certain Features

Features such as paper size and scanning speed are self-evident. The significance of some other features might not be so clear. Here are some examples:

VIRTUAL RESCAN is a software or hardware feature that improves image quality.

MULTIFEED DETECTION solves a common problem of missing pages owing to the scanner feeding double sheets, etc.

AUTOCROP detects the size of a page and automatically adjusts the output. Without this feature, all images would be the same size whatever be the size of the original.

IMAGE ENDORSING means the facility for stamping text or numeric sequences on images.

Value-Adding Software

One common value addition is the ability to process the scanned documents for keyword searching. This is done using barcodes and OCR (optical character recognition).

Forms-processing software can recognize handprint, and work with variable forms such as supplier invoices. Manual data entry is minimized with the help of forms-processing software.

OCR software converts scanned images of Word Documents, Excel Spreadsheets, etc. into editable text documents.

Image-processing software can improve legibility and OCR accuracy in cases when scanned documents are difficult-to-scan documents owing twholesale pearlwholesale necklaceo such factors as poor contrast.

Some Relevant Issues

Specialty scanners might not work with Windows scanning software, and you would need to install special software. In general, scanners use TWAIN or ISIS drivers.

You should check into the continued availability of supplies and spares for the document-imaging scanner you decide to buy.

Conclusion

Document imaging scanners are the primary equipment for most document-imaging projects. Scanners come in a wide range of capabilities and prices. You must determine your specific requirements before you make the decision to buy a particular scanner.

The value of the document-imaging scanner can be enhanced with value-adding software such as forms processors and OCR.

Do You Know The Danger to Your Pets?

Common, Everyday Products Can Harm. . .Even Kill Your Animals!

We wash them, we comb them and we protect them from insects. . . but who is protecting our four-footed friends from our devotion? Commonly used products from shampoos and conditioners to fly spray and tick collars used to keep away bugs contain sometimes lethal doses of chemicals that can impair and even kill your animals.

There is no watchdog agency regulating the topical products you use on your pets and horses. It seems ironic, but according to the FDA, this effort was ceded back to an industry oversight group in the 1930s and hasnt changed since.

Everyday household products can be deadly.

Not long ago, KATU 2 in Portland, Oregon, reported on an accident involving a dog and common detergent. A woman said her dog suffered serious chemical burns from a product most people would consider harmless. The owner didn't think it was harmful so she didn't have it locked away.

Now, you wouldn't think laundry soap could be harmful to your pet just by getting on their skin. But this Basset Hound's misadventure is a warning to all pet owners. She had a skin reaction all over the bottom of her body according to Veterinarian Chuck Hawkins. A bottle of liquid detergent was on the floor near the cage. Somehow the dog got to it and got the lid off. After perhaps hours of lying in the liquid detergent, the dog was found bleeding and in pain.

The only warning on the label was: 'keep out of reach of children and to flush with water if it gets in your eyes.' While neither the veterinarian NOR the pet owner had an ingredient list available, what YOU should know is that many soaps use inexpensive synthetic chemicals to formulate their products and MANY OF THEM COULD BE CONSIDERED HARMFUL to humans as well as animals.

Soaps often include ingredients like Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) - an inexpensive agent that creates the sudsing action in soap. Its known to interfere with memory and optimal brain functioning. So, if you think your pet is disobedient and seems distracted or distraught after that wonderful suds-filled bath, it may be the soap that you used ALL OVER his body.

Many soaps and air fresheners include synthetic fragrances to mask odors on clothes, in hair and on your pets body. Synthetic fragrances are NOT BIODEGRADABLE and they do not have to be listed on a label according to the FDA.

Many of these chemicals are carcinogenic or otherwise toxic. They typically float in the air about 12" off the floor where babies and pets are most likely to spend their days walking or crawling through the toxins.

What should YOU DO to keep your animals safe?

The most important thing we can do is to begin reading labels and selecting ToxicFree products whenever we can. Remember that the skin is the largest organ in the body and readily absorbs toxins from the air and from topical products we apply. Swholesale pearlwholesale necklaceo its a priority to choose safe products to put on your pets skin since they will absorb ingredients we lather over their entire body.

HD DVD vs. Blu-ray Disc

DVD is very successful, and would definitely be around for quite sometime. However, as implemented. It is not a high definition format instead its just a typical output video. With the new technology it is now being enhanced to provide people the best quality of entertainment they ever wanted.

All the actions, all the adventures that we have right now can definitely make you say I've got everything I want in an entertainment. Blu-ray Disc It is the next generation optical packaged media disc format. It was named as Blu-ray for the reasons that the laser beam which reads the data from the new discs is blue violet instead of red. This so called blue laser disc technology has a shorter wave length than a red laser, that makes it possible to read data with greater precision. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video, as well as storing large amounts of data. Great privilege of watching

HD DVD

The HD (High-Definition) DVD standard is designed to be the successor to the standard DVD format, and is derived from the same underlying technologies. It is a next-generation optical disc format, featuring a significant increase in storage capacity facilitating support for high definition (HD) video and audio. The HD DVD name is derived from its origination as a high-definition extension of the DVD optical disc format.

Buying A Digital Camera - What Will You Use It For

It can be a hard decision deciding what camera to buy, but before you choose a digital camera you must decide what kind of photographer you want to be. Most people use their camera for everyday snapshots of friends, kids, family and events. If thats all you need it for youll most likely be just looking for a camera thats easy to use and compact.

Almost all compact cameras have auto focus, which helps us non-professional photographers take easy photos without having to worry about exposure and all that kind of stuff. Lots of these easy-to-use cameras come with scene modes for landscape, portraits and night shots etc. to make it even easier to use and get that prefect picture without even trying.

If you however hobbyists you may desire better visual effect and control. You should consider a camera with manual exposure controls, advanced features, extra optical zoom that will allow you more creativity when taking photos.

Youll hear lots of talk about megapixels and this has become one of the main selling points of cameras. So what are they you may ask, basically the more megapixels available the higher the resolution of the photo, which will be sharper and have better colour details.

Theres plenty of manufactures trying to out do each other in the megapixel area, the decision you need to make is down to what type of photographer you want to be, if you just want to print on ordinary 4 x 6 paper you wont notice much difference between three megapixel and seven. If on the other hand you hope to move into the semwholesale pearlwholesale necklacei or full professional photographer the high rating of eight or ten megapixels will allow you to capture a high level of picture detail which in turn will look better on large printouts of the photo.

We have covered only some of the basics here to help you to start understanding some of the features that digital cameras have. At first this can be daunting but as you do your research youll get to understand the terminology better.

Is Internet Phone Service Really Advantageous?

The invention of computers was followed by the advent of Internet services. Initially no one was able to recognize the huge potential of online service till it started being used for everything starting from marketing to shopping to sending mails in the shortest time possible to collecting information on each and everything. One of its more recent oblation is Internet phone service popularly referred to as VoIP service.

The main difference between Internet phone service and traditional channel of communication is of cables. While VoIP terminates calls via Internet, public switch telephony on the other hand transmits calls through optical fiber wires. You still make the calls the way you used to and the receiver on the other hand would still receive it in the way he would earlier. So what has changed?

Reasons For Deploying VoIP call termination service

1. Flexible - Internet phone service is a flexible technology for call transmission thereby it can easily be deployed by different sectors of the industry irrespective of their service and scale and also by residentials.
2. Cost Effective - Most common reason for migrating to IP telephony service is its cost effective feature. Since call is routed through online web interface the total cost of call is more than half of what you would pay through your regular telephone lines. So more savings!
3. Ease Of Integration - Your Internet phone service provider can assist you in integrating your old telephony system with VoIP phone service with maximum ease.
4. Mobility - You will remain connected to your friends, family, relatives or clients from across the globe with VoIP broadband phone service. Take your VoIP phone with you where ever you travel or simply use your laptop to connect to the Internet and enjoy low rate, high quality calling.
5. Low cost of operations - Internet phone service relies mainly on high speed broadband service. Besides there the cost of hardware is minimum as opposed to traditional public switch telephony network.

Capturing Special Moments With A Digital Camera

There are millions of people around the world who share a keen interest in photography. The charm of capturing a moment in a camera is truly amazing. Probably, this is one of the strongest reasons why a growing number of people are joining the cult of professional photographic pursuit. Traditionally, taking photographs, film processing and developing them in the dark room was a painfully long process. But as digital technology evolved, it enabled camera manufacturing companies to come up with high-end digital cameras.

Digital cameras are an ideal gadget for taking pictures without having to worry about running out of snaps of roll which is the case with the traditional film cameras. This apart, there is no need of having to wait till the entire roll of film gets used just to find the blown-up pictures in the dark room. Digital cameras allow you to take any number of photographs and see each one of them right after you take them. Also you can connect your camera to the USB port of you Personal Computer and store your snaps there in a folder. What is more is that you can customize each photograph, thru software, just the way like it. In case, you want to take a hard-copy of the pictures, you can always use the printer to get your favorite photograph printed out.

Buying a digital camera is a matter of serious deliberation. Since different brands of companies are offering cameras with special features, you have be aware of the standard features of the digital cameras in order to be able to make the right purchase. The following are some of the must-know tips that you should be familiar with before you swipe you credit card in a digital camera kiosk of a shopping mall or punch in the CVV number in the box while shopping online for a captivating camera.

Price Range:

The price of digital photographic cameras can usually range anything from US$100 to $1000. If you are buying a digital compact camera for the first time, then don`t go for an expensive one. It is quite easy to get tempted into spending a lot of money to buy a digital SLR camera offering features that are just of no use to you. Get to know your needs and settle for a prudent purchase. Ensure that the digital camera you pick should be light-weighted and easy-to-use. Later on, after you learn the basics of digital camera photograph, you may opt for an high-end edition.

Features:

The standard features of digital cameras of all make are almost similar except for some special features introduced by some renowned brands in the market. Features such as zoom, automatic functions, special effects, black & white images and video recording facilities are usually offered by most brands. However, as a prudent buyer you have be careful of the claims some manufactures might be making. For instance, the feature of digital zoom magnifications may not actually live up to your expectation level if you are hoping to get the optimal clarity especially if you are aiming at say 8x10 or larger size photos. Do not be tempted by the flashy promotional gimmickry of the brands. Consider the features keeping your pre-established price range in mind.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin For Healthy Eyes

"Carotenoids" is the term which describes the large range of more than 600 phytochemical pigments from which many plants derive their characteristic red, orange or yellow colourings. Those most commonly found in modern Western diets are alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene.

Alpha and beta-carotene have traditionally attracted most attention as they can be synthesised by the body to form vitamin A, one of the body's most powerful anti-oxidants, immune system boosters and infection fighters. More recently lycopene has won substantial publicity as a possible weapon in the battle against cancer, particularly that of the prostate.

Like lycopene, neither lutein nor zeaxanthin are "pro-vitamin A" active substances in the way that alpha and beta-carotene are, but the evidence now indicates that they also function as valuable fat-soluble anti-oxidants within the body, and as such may be particularly important in preventing free radical damage to the delicate but vital fatty structures of the body's cells such as the membranes. These fat-soluble anti-oxidants also help to prevent the oxidation of low-density blood lipids (LDL), the so-called "bad cholesterol", which is implicated as a major factor in the development of cardiovascular disease.

But in addition to sharing the general health giving anti-oxidant properties of carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin have been highlighted for their role in maintaining visual health, and particularly in protecting against the principal causes of loss of vision in later life, ie age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts.

The macula is the centre of the eye's retina, and its degeneration is the main cause of visual deterioration and ultimately even blindness amongst the elderly in affluent Western societies. Since lutein and zeaxanthin are the only carotenoids found in the retina, particular attention has been paid to their possible role in eye health, and it appears that both may play a role in preventing oxidative damage from blue and ultra-violet light, ie sunlight, in the macula. Like every other structure in the body, the cells of the retina are vulnerable to free radical damage in the absence of sufficient anti-oxidants and research published in the Journal of the American Medical association in 1994 suggests a 43% reduced incidence of AMD for those following a diet rich in lutein and zeaxanthin anti-oxidants as against those whose diet was poorest in these foods.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are likewise the only carotenoids found in the lens of the eye, where ultra-violet light and oxidative damage can cause the growth of the cataracts that frequently obscure the vision of the elderly. Several research studies have demonstrated that diets rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, particularly dark green, leafy vegetables, may reduce the incidence of cataracts by as much as 25-50%.

Conventional medicine nevertheless continues to insist that these findings may be due to elements in a lutein rich diet other than lutein and zeaxanthin themselves, although commonsense would seem to suggest that as these are the only carotenoids present in these vital structures of the eye, nature has probably put them there for a good reason.

Seeing Is Believing

Binoculars make everything clearer. Raise them to your eyes and you can see distance only imaginable. They are ideal for everything from sports arenas to concerts to beaches. Binoculars are now smaller and lighter than ever before. They are one of the most perfect travel accessories, allowing you to see distance clearly when you travel. There are many brands to choose from: Tasco, Bushnell, and Minolta among the few that come to mind. There are also many features available today. A few of the important ones to look for are coated optics to reduce light loss and glare. This will give you a brighter image with less eyestrain. Many binoculars also have soft or rubber fold-down eyecups so eyeglass wearers can see the entire field of view. Waterproof and fog proof binoculars are popular with the boating crowd. These models can withstand complete immersion in water and always stay dry inside. The interior optical surfaces also won't fog due to rapid temperature change or humidity. Many of the waterproof models are air tight and dry-nitrogen sealed. Some are corrosion resistant and also buoyant. These should not be confused with water-repellent models, which just repel water from the lens. Optics should be fully coated for superior light transmission. Binocular straps are a comfortable and secure way to wear your binoculars. Some models also come with cases they can attach to a belt.

There are binoculars designed for bird watchers. These not only let you see distance, but also give you close up focus capability as close as seven feet. They are also ideal for insect identification. Binoculars are now smaller and lighter than the older models. They measure the weight of the newer models in ounces rather than pounds. They are perfect to pack along in your lightweight luggage. Whether you wish to focus on a mountain range in the United States, or a museum in Europe, binoculars are perfect for taking in the details. Hiking, fishing and hunting, they are designed for dependability. They are slimmer and much lighter due to in part magnesium. They are generally shockproof and rugged enough for any travel you have in mind. Binoculars are also available with compasses for hiking and wilderness travel. There are models with digital cameras built in. You can photograph a sports event, a children's concert, or any special event.

Permanent focus binoculars are a feature that will not let anything pass you by. You simply have to raise them to your eyes and you can catch the action instantly with clarity. There is no adjustment necessary. They focus instantaneously at virtually any distance. This makes them perfect for sporting events, and nature observations. Even when gloves might hinder the use of standard focus binoculars, the permanent focus is readily available. Understanding how to read the magnification or power field is simple. The first number separated by an "x" is the power of the binocular. It means the object being viewed appears to be that number of times closer than you would see with an unaided eye. The second number after the "x" is the diameter of the objective or front lens. The larger the number is, the more light that enters the binocular and the brighter the image. Binoculars are the ideal choice for corporate gifts because they are generously received and appreciated by both men and women. Logos or initials can be placed not only on the binoculars themselves, but also on the carrying case. Other terms to look for in your binocular purchase are the type of Lens coating. Simple coated lenses are a single layer on at least one lens surface. Fully coated lens are a single layer on all air-to-glass surfaces. Multi-coated lenses are multiple layers on at least one lens surface. Fully multi-coated lens means multiple layers on all air-to-glass surfaces. Coated optics is the lens surface coating that reduces light loss and glare due to reflection for a brighter image. These give a higher contrast image, which results in less eyestrain. In order to determine the circle of light visible at the eyepiece of a binocular, divide the objective lens diameter by the power. (These are the two numbers on either side of the "x".) An 8x32 model has an exit pupil visibility number of 4mm, and the larger the exit pupil, the brighter the image. Some binoculars utilize more coating layers on the prism of the binoculars for more light transmission. Higher quality glass also yields brighter images and sharpness. Binoculars give you a view so sharp and clear you're completely immersed in a world outside yourself. When shopping for your discount luggage, make sure you look at the wide array of binoculars to provide clarity and make seeing believing.

Top of the Line Digital Cameras

If you think that digital cameras are for snapshots only, then you obviously haven't heard about SLR (Single Lens Reflex) digital cameras. SLR is a type of camera which has one lens for composing the frame and capturing the image. SLR cameras are also known as TTL (through-the-lens) cameras.

An SLR camera displays an image through the viewfinder that is exactly the same image as the camera sees and is exactly the same image that the camera is going to record when you release the shutter.

An SLR camera provides a much more accurate image through the viewfinder than a digital camera produces on its LCD because the LCD does not faithfully reproduce the colors and light intensity that is actually entering the camera.

The top of the line SLR digital cameras rival the best film-based SLR cameras and are designed for serious hobbyists and professional photographers. Digital SLR cameras are much larger, bulkier, and heavier than traditional digital cameras.

The SLR uses a mirror that is located behind the lens as well as an optical device known as a pentaprism to channel the light that enters the camera's lens to the optical finder. When you release the shutter the mirror moves out of the way and the image is captured in the same way as any digital camera.

The better digital SLR cameras let you mount different lenses just like their film-based counterparts do. Many of your existing 35mm lens may be compatible with a digital SLR. If you have a large lens collection then you should definitely look for a digital SLR that is compatible with them.

Because the digital SLR cameras are more professional, they come with a hefty price tag. A 6-megapixel Nikon D100 runs around $2,000 and the 11-megapixel Canon 1D runs near $8,000. This is for the camera body only and does not include a lens! This is why I mentioned earlier that you should look for a digital camera that will mount your existing lens collection. Just a good quality zoom lens can run you at least $3,000 and can climb as high as $10,000 depending upon the features!

Of course, there are also starter-priced digital SLR cameras available. The Olympus E-20N, a 5.0-megapixel SLR camera, which includes a non-replaceable lens that is capable of duplicating a 35 mm to 140 mm lens, runs around $3500.

These prices are not out of line if you make your living shooting pictures. You can actually create additional revenue streams when you shoot digital pictures, instead of film-based ones, by offering image enhancement options and all sorts of digital FX options for thee prospective bride and groom's on their treasured wedding album.

If all of this sounds a bit too expensive for your blood, then you'll probably find all of the digital camera that you'll ever need way down in the $99 to $500 price range and you'll never have to worry about buying extra lenses. Digital SLR cameras aren't for everyone but, if they're for you, then there are plenty of models to look at. Some of the best are made by Canon, Olympus and Nikon which are familiar names in the photography world.

Laptop Notebook - What defines a Laptop

The laptop notebook computer is one of the greatest technological advances to come along. And you will probably find it difficult to eschew the computer if you live if the modern world, unless you are Amish. The desktop computer was a wonderful invention, but the laptop notebook computer is gaining a powerful momentum that is hard to ignore.

While people have come to use the terms laptop and notebook interchangeably to describe the portable computing devices that business owners and stay-at-home moms alike carry around, there are a few differences between the two.

A laptop computer is a portable computer that is small enough to fit comfortably in the users lap. They are a bit larger than their counterparts the notebook computer. Laptop computers are normally larger to include such features as built in or removable CD ROM drives.

Most standard laptops will feature a 14 inch to 17 inch screen, a full featured keyboard, 2+ hour battery life, integrated audio system, mid to high level graphics cards, integrated modem and WiFi capabilities, and a built in or removable optical drive. Laptops offer the ability to be upgraded to some extent also.

A notebook computer is designed to be ultra-portable and ultra-lightweight. Therefore, it includes the minimal amount of features necessary to provide the greatest degree of mobility. Standard notebook computers feature 4+ hours battery life, minimal graphics system, no internal optical drive, 12 to 14 inch screen, integrated modem and network capabilities, and the smallest possible keyboard. It is also normally thinner than a traditional laptop computer.

With technology improving at such a rapid pace, though, it is now possible to include much more computing power into a smaller space. This may be one of the reasons that the line has become blurred between the laptop and notebook computers. Now, both of these mobile computing devices have simply become known as the laptop notebook.

And since the differences are so slight, there really is no harm in putting the two into the same category. Most people do not care enough to recognize the difference in the terminology anyway. They just know that they want their laptop notebook along for the ride.

How do I find the right contact lenses for me.

If you are looking to buy some contact lenses then look no further than the internet. Normally only the more readily known brands such as Acuvue and Ciba Vision can be found online and because you are not using the traditional method of purchasing them by visiting your local optometrist or optical shop, you will find that you can get discounted lenses from the manufacturer who will ship them directly to you. Also if you would like to purchase coloured contact lenses you will find that the choices available to you online are far greater than if you decided to go to your local store. Say for example if you wanted to buy some special effects lenses then why not consider purchase a pair of Halloween contact lenses directly online to help jazz up your costume.

Unfortunately there are a large number of people who suffer with astigmatisms and find it difficult to get contact lenses to suit them. However, these people will now find that many suppliers of lenses can offer a wide range of toric lenses and can be hard or soft and even coloured if they wish. But due to the precise nature of these types of lenses it is best that people with astigmatisms look at purchasing the best quality ones that they can. For example they should consider buying Acuvue Advance which will provide them with comfort and ease of wearing at all times.

However, if you are someone who suffers from a problem such as dry eye, or you work in an awkward environment then it is best to look at purchasing Acuvue Oasys. These are the first lenses that have been designed to deal work in any sort of extreme environment and are a must for any person who want maximum performance from their lenses at all times. These have been made using Hydraclear Technology, which results in more water and oxygen being transferred to your eye and just like any modern lenses found in glasses they also offer you full UVA and UVB protection as well.

Remember you should not accept less protection against UVA and UVB when wearing contact lenses than what you would accept from a pair of sunglasses.

It is important that any one with contact lenses should keep them clean and their vision will only be good if they take proper care of their lenses at all times. It might be worthwhile considering purchasing a product such as Ciba Vision Clear Care to help take care of your lenses and keep them in good condition. Otherwise if you dont feel you can make this type of routine each day it may be well worth while considering purchasing either daily disposable lenses or the latest kind which are Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses and these can be left in for extended periods of times.

Remember your eyes are important and should be cared for at all times.

Night and Day: Contact Lenses You Can Live In

Focus Night and Day soft contact lenses provide you with the truly extended wear freedom you've always dreamed of. For 30 days and nights, you can wear the same pair of contacts without worrying about cleaning them or removing them each night or remembering to insert them each morning. This is the next best thing to having perfect vision.

By designing the Night and Day lenses to deliver six times more oxygen than the average pair of soft contacts, Focus has far surpassed the competition in providing a comfortable lens-wearing experience. Additionally, they have alleviated the concerns many eye care professionals have expressed regarding the long term effects of extended wear contacts on optical health by developing this product to resist the build-up characteristics usually found on traditional contact lenses.

This brand of contacts is a great alternative for those who hate the inconvenience of daily lens care but who either cannot afford or are leery of the dangers related to laser surgery. Even so, they are not for everyone. Some people will find their eyes are too sensitive to go long periods of time with reduced oxygen exposure to their corneas. Others may discover that wearing contacts over night leads to too much discomfort from the dryness that normally occurs from not blinking and rewetting the eyes through the course of the evening. And, unfortunately, if you require astigmatism correction, you will need to find toric contacts instead.

The safest bet before purchasing Night and Day contacts is to discuss your options with your optometrist who can review your eye care history and help you make the right decision based on your unique optical needs. And remember that even if your contact of choice is Night and Day, you may need to vary the amount of time you wear them to accommodate your own sensitivities.

While 30 days is the maximum recommend usage, you may find you are only receiving clear, comfortable wear for 20 days. If that is the case, do not give in to the temptation to continue wearing them. Your eyes are supposed to last a life time. Do your part by treating your eyes with the care they deserve.

The Postal Price Correction

By now, unless you have been on a desert island for the past month, youve probably heard about the impending postal rate change. For the first time ever, the rate structure will consider an items shape in addition to its weight. Under the current system, a three-ounce letter, flat or parcel costs the same to mail for the consumer but not for the USPS.

It was not until July 1971 that the Post Office Department evolved into the modern USPS. The Postal Reorganization Act empowered the Postal Rate Commission to recommend postal rates and mail classifications for adoption by the newly formed Board of Governors and required that rates for each mail class cover direct and indirect costs.

Modern Machinery
Accelerated automation of the postal system began in the late 1960s, with the introduction of automated cancellers, optical character readers (OCRs) and special barcode readers. Manual processing of handwritten addresses has been largely automated. The USPS is also automating the processing of flats and parcels.
The proposed postal pricing plan offers price incentives for efficient, automation-friendly mailings while reserving the biggest increases for items that require hand processing, especially when other packaging options are available.

The Push for Efficiency
The new rate structure carries stiffer increases for lightweight flats and parcels. Customers who mail flats weighing less than 3.5 ounces and parcels below thirteen ounces will see the highest price hikes. As the item gets lighter, the rate increase percentage rises dramatically.
Under the new system, postage costs will decrease for certain types of mail. Letters weighing more than one ounce and flats that weigh between seven and thirteen ounces will cost less.
The proposed pricing structure encourages use of flat and letter mailings whenever possible to take advantage of automated processing. Changing a flat to a letter and a parcel to a flat yields larger savings to the customer.

The Biggest Impact
Many businesses need to plan now to absorb double-digit postage increases. Commonly mailed, lightweight items will incur steep postage increases if they continue to ship in small boxes and padded envelopes. Similarly, companies that use 9 x 12 envelopes to mail statements, newsletters, brochures and catalogs will also see a severe price jump. As a result, many mail-order retailers, financial institutions and fulfillment houses are rethinking their packaging options.
Reconfiguring the mailing system to work within the new rate structure holds the potential for significant cost savings.

Digital Camera Terms To Know

It helps when learning to use your new digital camera to also know what some of the more common terms mean. Below you will find many of these common terms defined.. Automatic Mode A setting that sets the focus, exposure and white-balance automatically. Burst Mode or Continuous Capture Mode a series of pictures taken one after another at quickly timed intervals with one press of the shutter button. Compression The process of compacting digital data, images and text by deleting selected information. Digital Zoom Cropping and magnifying the center part of an image. JPEG The predominant format used for image compression in digital cameras Lag Time The pause between the time the shutter button is pressed and when the camera actually captures the image

LCD (Liquid-Crystal Display) is a small screen on a digital camera for viewing images.

Lens A circular and transparent glass or plastic piece that has the function of collecting light and focusing it on the sensor to capture the image. Megabyte (MB) Measures 1024 Kilobytes, and refers to the amount of information in a file, or how much information can be contained on a Memory Card, Hard Drive or Disk. Pixels Tiny units of color that make up digital pictures. Pixels also measure digital resolution. One million pixels adds up to one mega-pixel. RGB Refers to Red, Green, Blue colors used on computers to create all other colors. Resolution Camera resolution describes the number of pixels used to create the image, which determines the amount of detail a camera can capture. The more pixels a camera has, the more detail it can register and the larger the picture can be printed. Storage Card The removable storage device which holds images taken with the camera, comparable to film, but much smaller. Also called a digital camera memory card... Viewfinder The optical "window" to look through to compose the scene. White Balance White balancing adjusts the camera to compensate for the type of light (daylight, fluorescent, incandescent, etc.,) or lighting conditions in the scene so it will look normal to the human eye.

How Industries Increase ROI by using Fiber Laser Marking for the Imaging Process

Most laser marking techniques involve either engraving the mark into metal or plastic components, or ablating a surface layer to reveal a contrasting material underneath. Both processes usually require high energy pulsed laser systems and of course involve process debris.

Fiber lasers are now a robust industrial tool with a unique series of capabilities that enable a wide range of precision materials processing manufacturing methods. Fiber lasers offer low running costs, a fast ROI, a small footprint and exceptional reliability, and are thus enjoy a growing acceptance within the laser-assisted manufacturing industry as a cost-effective alternative to conventional laser design.

Laser marking is able to generate high contrast, easily readable and durable identification on a wide variety of components for industrial use or consumer products. Computer generated vector or bitmap patterns (logos, barcodes or text) can be engraved or etched using a non-contact process onto metallic and nonmetallic materials, including metals, plastics, glass, electronics, PCBs, wafers, medical devices, sporting goods and packaging.

A combination of a reliable industrial laser, fast and accurate galvanometric imaging systems and convenient computer control provides manufacturers with a unique combination of speed, permanence and versatility that cannot be matched by any other marking technique.

Laser marking processes Traditionally, laser marking involves either engraving a physical mark onto a surface just as for traditional engraving methods, generating a simple color change in surface, or etching of a surface layer of material to reveal another, highly contrasting layer underneath. Either technique can be used on a broad spectrum of materials, and in addition to generating identifying marks can also form part of an industrial process, for example in electronics manufacture.

The advantages of laser marking include speed, flexibility and the non-contact marking process, meaning that components parts are not stressed by the marking process. The non-contact nature of the process also contributes to low maintenance schedules, as tools do not need to be replaced. Additionally laser marking is also highly repeatable and easily readable (even machine readable).

Stringent Quality Control A laser engraving process is often used for marking metal surfaces as it is swift, non contact and extremely durable, but is however also responsible for the production of debris - fine metallic particles removed from the surface as part of the engraving process.

Naturally for bearing manufacture there are stringent requirements for process debris. The marking of bearing housings using a laser has thus traditionally combined a minimal engraving process with an induced change in surface color. CMS had until recently accomplished this using Nd:YAG lasers, but customer demand was looking for a way around the cost, maintenance, lifetime and reliability issues associated with the Nd:YAG design.

Diamond or Cubic Zirconia: Knowing the difference can save you money!

Learn why cubic zirconia has been recognized as a beautiful synthetic gemstone that has quickly become a desirable substitute for diamond. Knowing the difference between diamond and cubic zirconia can help you make better purchasing decisions and in turn, save you time and money.

So what is the difference between diamond and cubic zirconia? Why is cubic zirconia (CZ) quickly becoming more popular as a desirable substitute for diamond? Gemologists can agree that CZ comes closer than any other gem material to matching the characteristics of a diamond.

Most people, even trained gemologists, cannot tell the difference between diamond and CZ, with the naked eye. Moreover, to the untrained eye, CZ looks identical to a good quality diamond. However, under closer inspection, CZ appears to have slightly less brilliance (or sparkle) than a diamond, and more fire, or flashes of color.

CZs were originally developed by the Russians, for their space program. They were developed as an alternative to diamonds that were used in the optics of their lasers. CZs have a refractive index, dispersion and hardness so close to a diamond it's uncanny.

So what are some key features that can guide you in telling the difference between diamond and CZ? Do keep in mind, though, in order to accurately distinguish the two gems, gemological equipment such as microscope, or loupe, must be used for testing and verification.

To start, lets take a look at the hardness factor: Did you know CZ ranges between 8.5 to 9.0 on the Mohs hardness scale whereas diamond, one of the hardest materials known to man, is rated 10, lying at the top of the hardness scale?

Furthermore, glass (or sand) is rated approximately 5 to 6 on the hardness scale, therefore, dust and dirt will not scratch CZ. Indeed, CZ can scratch glass just like regular diamonds, making it more resistant to chipping. One great difference between diamond and CZ is weight. CZs are heavyweights in comparison to diamonds; a CZ will weigh approximately 1.75 times more than a diamond of equivalent size. So basically, a piece of CZ the same size as a one-carat diamond weighs about 1.75 carats. Wellisnt that interesting?

Contemporary production of CZ is virtually flawless, whereas diamond usually contains impurities and inclusions, or have some sort of defect, be it a feather, included crystal, or perhaps a remnant of an original crystal face (e.g. trigons).

In regards to colormore precisely, the lack of coloronly the rarest of diamonds are truly colorless, as most have a tinge of yellow or brown to some extent. By comparison, CZ in most cases can be made entirely colorless, equivalent to a perfect "D" on diamond's color grading scale.

Also, under close inspection with a loupe, the facet shapes of some CZs appear different from diamonds. Both gems disperse light a little differently. Dispersion is just a scientific term for the breaking up of light into its spectral colors. With a dispersive power greater than diamond (0.060 vs. 0.044), the more prismatic fire of CZ can be seen by even an untrained eye.

How to Start out in Embroidery Digitizing

To start something in embroidery digitizing, it is indeed necessary to first have an embroidery machine, a disc of designs and perhaps some Embroidery Digitizing Software. However this does not end the list of requirements to start embroidery digitizing. There is much more needed to enter the world of embroidery digitizing.

When investing in embroidery digitizing software, it is important that your computer matches its minimum system requirements. It is only if the computer's specifications meet the specifications of the embroidery digitizing software that it is possible to run the embroidery digitizing software, and use it in the computer.

Manufacturers of embroidery digitizing software generally recommend using an IBM PC or any other compatible computer having a USB port. Regarding the mouse, there are no specifications by embroidery digitizing software. However, it is generally better to use a comfortable, optical and non-roller ball mouse. This is because it is not possible to do precise imaging with a roller ball mouse.

Regarding the processor, it is better to use a fast processor for embroidery digitizing as embroidery digitizing involves imaging and not typing of letters. It is better to have extra memory in the computer as there is never too much of memory space in a computer. Moreover, memory is cheap and provides better embroidery digitizing as more designs can be stored in the computer.

Embroidery digitizing calls for lots of hard disk free space. Basically, 100 MB of space is enough to install embroidery digitizing software. However, once you have creations to store, you are going to need much more hard disk free space. Using a 32 bit color monitor is better for embroidery digitizing as it makes differentiating of thread colors easier.

These are the basic requirements to start out in embroidery digitizing. However, if required, you can also invest in a graphic printer, CD-ROM drive, CD-ROM Recorder Drive and many other accessories.

7 Things You Should Know About Optical Migraines

Sometime in our lives, we experience headaches that come and go and are often so severe that our daily routines are affected. Oftentimes, when these headaches occur, we also experience some form of visual changes. Then we say, Its probably just a migraine.

1. What is a migraine? Migraine is a recurrent type of headache that is severely painful and usually occurs only on one side of the head. An aura occurs right before one of these attacks. An aura could be manifested as visual flashes or spots or even ringing in the ears which is opposite of the side where the headache is about to occur. The migraine attack may also come with symptoms of dizziness, vomiting, nausea and double vision.

2. What is an optical migraine? As opposed to a real migraine, an optical migraine also involves an aura that comes before a migraine attack, but there is the absence of pain. This is rarer than the migraine that comes with severe pain. It is also know as acephalgic migraine or visual or ocular migraine. It is a migraine aura unaccompanied by headache.

The visual disturbances that are experienced are flashing lights that look like zigzag or fortress-like lights. These auras usually begin as small visual marches crossing the field of vision that slowly fades away. Attacks like these last for several minutes to almost an hour.

If it will come with a headache, the pain will follow in an hour. An optical migraine can also be experienced as a blind spot in the field of vision.

3. How sure am I that I am experiencing an optical migraine? Migraines are usually diagnosed if the same symptoms are experiences over and over in many years. It is optical migraine if the same aura is experienced. In case there is a change in the visual pattern, it might be something more serious. A doctor should be consulted in this case.

4. What could be the cause of these migraines? The cause for migraine is not yet confirmed, it has remained unknown. However, there have been theories that these headaches are caused by allergies, temporary edema of the brain and even endocrine disturbances. One thing is for sure, it is due to disturbance in the blood circulation in the brain. It has been proven that the pain is associated with the narrowing of blood vessels in the brain followed by dilation.

5. What could be more serious causes of headaches if they are not migraines? Not all headaches are migraines and not all visual disturbances are caused by migraines. There could be more serious causes that may force you to consult a doctor. Visual changes can also be caused by partial seizures, a retina in the eye could have been detached, a mini-stroke or a transient ischemic attack, multiple sclerosis or even a brain tumor.

6. Who is more likely to get an optical migraine? Optical migraines are usually experienced by more women than men at a ratio of 3:1. This is an illness that is usually inherited.

Document Storage Scanning To CD

Fast and easy retrieval of you information is critical to your business success. And your documents, both on hard drive and paper, are the lifeblood of your organization. So it makes sense to preserve them for any eventuality. But should you try to do it yourself of find a professional firm to do it for you? Read on to find out.

Document Storage: Why You Should Outsource

Fast and easy retrieval of you information is critical to your business success. And your documents, both on hard drive and paper, are the lifeblood of your organization. So it makes sense to preserve them for any eventuality.

But whether your documents are on paper or in electronic form, your data can still be at the mercy of natural or man-made disaster or hard-drive failure. Such loss could cripple your business so it's essential to have an effective back-up system in place. So how to do it?

Transferring you paper documents and hard-disk data to optical media is the first step. This allows easy retrieval of any information you need. With an efficient indexing system, just pop the disc into the drive and voila. No need to search through dusty storerooms and cart out heavy boxes.

Once you've decided to go ahead and backup your critical data, you have to decide whether to do it yourself or outsource to a professional company.

It really depends on the volume of documents you have to work with. But considering the importance of your company information, it makes sense to bring in a professional firm for the following reasons.

Firstly, they're up-to-date on the latest and most effective methods of data storage. For example, perhaps you've already backed up some of your hard disk data to standard Cd's. After all, they last forever, right? Unfortunately not. Some statistics on the shelf life of recorded Cd's might shock you. Unless you take great care, standard CD/DVDs can degrade to the point of being unreadable in as little to 2-5 years. Professional data storage firm will be knowledgeable of the latest media such as the latest Kodak Gold discs which offer effective lifespan of 80-300 years.

Another important reason to outsource to a document imaging solution provider is that their staff are trained and knowledgeable experts in data conversion. Scanning workflow, for example, is a complicated undertaking, especially if large volumes of documents and deadlines are involved. This really needs an expert's touch. Solution providers also offer data entry services to key-in important meta data from documents to create a searchable database of your paper.

Then professional firms have the state-of-the-art equipment to handle any kind or size of job. The resulting efficiencies lower production costs which leads to lower costs for you. Buying, installing such hardware yourself and then training you own staff in its use would be prohibitively expensive and time-consuming.

In addition, a solution provider will manage your entire document conversion project. This means there's no need to tie-up any of your own resources in the conversion process. Such projects can be complex, requiring needs assessment, planning and estimating before the actual scanning begins. And the imaging company's staff can work on-site on your own premises so there's no need to your confidential documents to leave the building.

Considering the inestimable value of your documents, you need to entrust your project to a reputable firm. Look for one with a proven track-record of working for blue chip clients which should include vertical market expertise. If you deal with large format documents, make sure the firm employs technicians familiar with architectural or engineering drawings and who can effectively handle such jobs.

New York Document Scanning, a global outsourcing company, is headquartered in New York, NY with offices in Kolkata, India and provides scanning services at some of the best prices found anywhere. Get free quotes for all your document scanning needs.

Digital Cameral Purchase Advice

Digital Camera has become a very popular consumer item, since it makes so easy and cheap to take pictures. However, some buyers are impulsive by nature and they are hardly aware of the standard features of digital cameras. Only after using the camera, they may realize its drawbacks. Therefore, it is important to know some standard features of digital cameras so that one can make the right decisions while buying this gadget.

The following are some standard features:

Computing Platform: Most digital cameras have interface compatibility with Mac as well as Windows operating system platforms. However, some cameras might have more software for one platform than the other, where as a few will work only on one platform. In this case, usually these cameras work on Windows platform.

Image Quality: It basically includes factors such as exposure accuracy, color purity, optics (lens) quality and image compression techniques.

Onboard Image Capacity: Whether a specific amount of onboard image capacity is sufficient or not depends largely on your application. Image capacity and image quality share a strong co-relation with each other. For instance, there is not point in having a digital camera that offers high image capacity whereas the amount of storage is not adequate in relation to the resolution. Beware of the cameras that promise a large number of images but lack actual storage space. It might affect the image quality of your photos. Standard onboard camera memory might range from 2 to 16 MB and the image storage capacity can vary from 10 to 100+ images, depending on the image resolution.

Reusable Memory Cards: There are quite a few digital cameras that allow storing images on plug-in cards and this enables users to add as much or as little memory to the camera as per individual requirement. Unlike the older version of memory card where a single type of memory card known as Liner PCMCIA was being extensively used, now memory cards can be found in different types. Some of the most popular cards are Compact Flash and FlashMedia.

Exposure Versatility: Digital cameras are unable to handle different lighting conditions. This drawback is not found in film cameras as we can compensate for different lighting situations by using different types of films. So, since the image sensor of a digital camera acts as a film, users find nearly impossible to change this setup. However, you can ensure that the digital camera you are buying has the ideal camera exposure system, such as shutter speed, variable lens opening and supplementary flash to handle a wide range of shooting conditions.

Other features:

Consider buying a waterproof camera as it can withstand moistures.

The camera you are buying should preferably have ISO support for crisper and cleaner images.

Go for higher mega pixel resolution cameras, which will offer you greater cropping ability. The higher the mega pixel resolution, the more one can enlarge his photographs. But don`t get too fussy about mega pixel resolution as it is not everything in a digital camera.

Look for pre-programmed scene modes in your camera which will take photos even in the tough and challenging lighting conditions.

While buying, focus more on optical zoom of a digital camera and not so much on the digital zoom. Optical zoom makes use of lens to get closer shots and delivers better images.

Finally, you have to be careful of not being lured into buying a camera with a `package deal` offer. What costs cheaper could also be cheaper in quality too! Digital cameras have made it easy for those who want to capture special moments. Now with so many features and affordable prices, digital camera have really become a world wide consumer product.

Consider a Few Things Before Buying an HP Digital Camera

Hewlett Packard computer products are well-known and highly popular on the market. This brand supplies its consumers with everything they require for their computer needs from personal computers to laptops, and much more! So, if you already use and trust the Hewlett Packard brand, why not purchase an HP digital camera?

If you are new to digital photography, you might be puzzled with how to use an HP digital camera. While using an HP digital camera is easy for those who are technologically savvy, many people who are just getting used to the idea of a digital camera may have a lot of questions on how to use it properly. The following information is important to consider before buying and using an HP digital camera.

The first thing to pay attention to while buying an HP digital camera is its pixel capability. People who have no idea what a pixel is may overlook that information, but pixel capability really makes the difference in picture quality. If one were to zoom in on any picture that one takes on a digital camera, or any photo that is on a computer, lots of small blocks would be noticed. These blocks are called pixels, and the quality of an image is usually described in terms of those pixels.

With an HP digital camera, there are generally two types of zoom functions: optical zoom and digital zoom. An optical zoom is how far the camera lens can extend from the body of the camera. A digital zoom works in conjunction with the optical zoom, because where the optical zoom will focus on something, the digital zoom will take that intended picture and stretch the pixels of the picture to make it look larger.

Another thing people inexperienced in handling digital cameras may find troublesome is figuring out how to get the pictures off of the HP digital camera and download onto their computer. However, it is as easy as connecting the camera with the computer using a USB cable that comes along with your camera. Also, instead of the computer, you can transfer the pictures directly to some printers, which offer this capability among other features.

You can get more information on how to use an HP digital camera in the users guide that comes with the camera. The Internet research can also be helpful if you have a particular question about an HP digital camera. All in all, it is not so difficult to use an HP digital camera, and it can be fun once you master your skills.

Prescription Sunglasses

Prescription sunglasses are designed for people who have eye disorders, but who do not wish to wear boring spectacles. They have a corrective magnifying power like the lenses of spectacles and contact lenses but are designed in a sleek trendy manner that also caters to the fashion sense of the wearer.

Prescription sunglasses are bought according to the power of the lens as prescribed by an oculist. They can either magnify or diminish images as dictated by the needs of the wearer. Prescription sunglasses are available for all kinds of people who need lesser focal length lenses as well as those who need high prescriptions. Even bifocals are available that enable the wearer to see near and distant objects clearly.

Being sunglasses, prescription sunglasses not only better the vision, but they also protect the eyes from the harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun. Polarized prescription sunglasses protect the eyes from severe glares from water surfaces, snow or open roads.

The demand for prescription sunglasses has shot up in recent times. Photo-chromatic prescription sunglasses are becoming quite popular. These sunglasses have special lenses that become dark in the sun and lighten up indoors. Hence, they perform the job of both sunglasses as well as spectacles.

Prescription glasses can be as trendy as the wearer wants them to be. They are available in all kinds of frames with lenses of all possible tints and materials. The common materials for designing the lenses are glass, polycarbonate and CR-39 plastic. Glass is still preferred to make prescription lenses because it has superior optical properties. All leading eyewear manufacturers produce vast lines of prescription sunglasses.

Until a few years ago, prescription sunglasses were not available in the wraparound style because the curvature of the lenses increases greatly in the wraparound style and severely distorts vision. But now, prescription glasses with a little wraparound have been designed. This little curvature provided to the glasses offers them a more contemporary look.

Computer prescription sunglasses are also designed. These glasses, when worn, facilitate the user to look at the keyboard as well as at the computer desk without tilting the head. Polarized prescription sunglasses with progressive lenses have been designed especially for presbyopic people.

Prescription sunglasses are custom-made and they vary from person to person. As such they are priced higher. There are generally no refunds while ordering prescription sunglasses.

How does a digital camera passive auto focus work

In focus objects in a digital photo is a very basic requirement for high quality photography. There are two different ways to focus on such objects: manual or automatic. There are a few automatic focus methods one of them is known as passive auto focus.

High quality sharp and crisp digital photos are a result of many optical parameters that need to be set right. One of the most important optical parameters is focus. When objects in a digital photo are out of focus they look blurry and are missing details and clarity. When objects are in focus they look sharp and crisp.

While focus can be set manually by the photographer in most cases using the digital cameras automatic focus feature is much easier and faster. There are many different algorithms and methods that digital cameras use in order to automatically determine the right focus for a specific scenario. One of those methods is knows as passive auto focus.

Passive auto focus

In many ways the passive auto focus imitates the way in which we set the focus manually. The digital camera defines one or more regions in the picture to focus on. These areas are usually around the center of the photo and are marked as rectangles on the viewfinder or the LCD. The digital camera then analyzes the captured picture seen through those regions.

The digital camera has a built-in computer chip that can run image processing algorithms. The camera executes such image processing algorithms to determine a Focus Level number. The exact way in which such a number is calculated is out of the scope of this article. A very simplistic explanation is that the digital camera transforms the digital image to a frequency space and measures the amount of high frequencies in the photo (high frequency in an image correlates to high contrast or to focus). The more high frequencies present the more in focus an image is and the higher the Focus Level number is.

The digital camera goal is to maximize the Focus Level number. In this way the digital camera achieves the best possible focus (or at least theoretically achieves such a focus). The digital camera does that by moving its lenses back and forth as it recalculates the Focus Level number. The camera is searching for a position where the Focus Level number is the highest.

When such a position is found the digital camera compares the Focus Level number to a predetermined threshold. If it is higher the digital camera announces a successful focus (usually by coloring the focused areas in green). If it is lower the digital camera announces a failure (usually by coloring the non-focused areas in red).

The passive auto focus method is relatively cheap to implement as it does not require extra sensors (such as distance sensors for active focus solutions). However passive auto focus can also fail. The reasons can vary: poor lighting conditions, low contrast objects that are hard to focus on like walls or solid surfaces and others. When the auto focus fails you can either try to focus on other objects in the same distance from the digital camera, lock the focus and pan back to the original objects you wanted to capture or you can revert to old fashion manual focus.

Digital Video Camera: Cheaper Alternatives to Big Brands

Digital video camera is a video recording device that is based on digital instead of analog representations of the video signal. Commonly, digital video recording is done on tape which is then distributed on optical discs such as a Digital Video Disc or DVD. The exceptions are camcorders, where the recording is done directly to the DVD.

Though leading manufacturers of high quality digital video cameras are dominating the market, there is also place for smaller companies to cash in on the demand for such products. It is not unusual to see smaller companies from countries such as Taiwan also entering into the fray and selling their own versions of such high performance digital video cameras.

The G-Shot DV815z

Taiwanese brand Genius is a leading IT and consumer electronics company that is known all across the world. Its recently launched G-Shot DV815z is a remarkable digital video camera that has 4 megapixel super CCD image sensors and is also able to shoot pictures up to 8 megapixels. The camera delivers lively, vivid images, and it is ideal for shooting video as well as still photographs. This digital video camera is equipped with an integral flash sensor that detects the shooting conditions to help make the picture quality of high standards even when the lighting levels are low.

It also has 230 k pixel high resolution 2.5 inch color image LTPS-LCD monitor that can double as a viewfinder for still-image as well as video recording. The review facility on the display after capturing special moments is another handy feature. This digital video camera is rich in features and combines multi-functionality. It also has a 5-in-1 solution to give bigger bang for the buck and is more than merely clicking or recording video images.

Its 5-in-1 feature allows the user to capture digital video, digital still pictures as well as act as a digital voice recorder, music player and a mass storage device. This digital video camera is also able to handles unintentional hand movements to prevent images from becoming blurred. Its 3x optical zoom is one more function to add to the user control over movies and pictures, along with DPOF or digital print order format that makes it easy to print pictures. And this amazing digital video camera retails for under $350!

CDs and DVDs: Taking Care of Them

As a rule, optical discs -- CDs, CD-ROMs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and the many variants of DVDs -- are much more durable than some other types of data storage, such as floppy disks. In fact, the first batch of audio CDs produced in 1980 are claimed to last for 100 years (for more on the history of CDs, visit this page).

However, this doesn't mean that you're free to abuse your optical discs. Improper handling and usage leads to scratched, broken, or dirty discs. As the damage accrues, your discs become simply unreadable. Chances are you already know the run-of-the-mill tips regarding taking care of your CDs and DVDs. Some of these are:

1) Keep your discs away from medium to direct sunlight for an extended length of time. 2) Protect the underside (the "signal side") of the disc from scratches, dust, dirt, stains, water, and finger prints. 3) To clean your discs, gently wipe the underside with soft, dry cloth. Wipe starting from the inside hole to the rim in a straight motion. Do not wipe the disc in a circular motion.

If you've taken these precautions and still your discs fail in one way or another, then you can attribute it to uncertainty -- the culprit might be substandard manufacturing processes, or the varying materials used by different disc manufacturers.

For CDs and DVDs that you have burned yourself, there are some additional things that you'll need to take note of. First, know that manufactured discs are more durable than recorded ones, especially those that you did at home. This can be attributed to the different ways that the data is recorded for these discs -- manufactured CDs and DVDs have data literally pressed onto them, while recordable ones use dyes that change color or reflectivity under the heat of a laser.

Also remember that burning CDs and DVDs at high speeds (such as 52X) result in less dependable discs. The way to go is the middle speeds (e.g. 24X); as they always say, everything in moderation, and this is true in burning discs.

After you've burned your CDs and DVDs, the next step you often take is to label them, usually with marking pens. One word: DON'T. These can slowly seep into the dye layers and damage the data. As an alternative, you can write on the transparent area in the disc's center (there's no data recorded there).

Similar Developments: the steam engine and the search engine.

History repeats itself. If we can predict how the world-wide-web will transform society we may situate ourselves directly in the path it will grow. One way to gain perspective on the impact of the internet is to look at the development of similar world changing inventions. By focusing on some of the principles that defined the Industrial Age, perhaps we can understand more about whats happening today in the Digital Age. The development of steam engine and the development of the search engine bear interesting comparisons.

In November 2006 NetCraft, a UK firm that monitors the Internet announced that the World Wide Web now contains over a hundred million websites. Furthermore, analysts believe the net should reach two hundred million domains by 2010 and could grow exponentially larger by 2015. A good reliable unbiased search engine has never been so important. How else will humanity ever find what they are looking for?

On November 7th, 1885 Donald Alexander Smith the Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal hammered home the last spike in the first Canadian transcontinental main line at Craigellachie B.C. in the Eagle Pass. Sir William Cornelius Van Horne made his famous fifteen-word speech, "All I can say is that the work has been well done in every way". They were standing on almost 2,753 miles of track that had been laid across the Dominion of Canada. What none of the men around them knew was that the Canadian Pacific Railroad was critically short of good reliable steam locomotives. The firm had only a dozen engines of their own, and half of these were so old they were not considered capable of hauling anything beyond their own weight up (or down) the very steep 4.5% gradient of the Kicking Horse Mountain Pass. There was a steam engine shortage in Canada and all over the world in the 1880s and the historic Robert Stephenson & Co. foundry in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England (which had been contracted to provide at least two more engines for CPR) was absolutely swamped with orders. In July 1886 Stephenson had promised two hundred and nine units to various railroads all over the world. By 1899, his four horse shop had built over three thousand steam locomotives. For the purpose of our comparisons, he was the Google of his day. He had a good reliable product that delivered results, even under the most severe conditions or steep inclines.

In the same way corporations race to get online today, in the 1880s nations all over the world were anxiously building railroads. Steam driven rail transport was the respiratory system of the Industrial Age and simply put it breathed in raw materials and exhaled money. The steam engine itself was the high technology advance of the day and over a period of about fifty years it changed the entire world. The railway regulated the flow of goods like no other mass transportation system in existence - it siphoned surpluses and fixed deficits overnight. Steel rails created markets where none had existed before, and by 1900 this improvement had revolutionized every sector of society, ferrying goods and passengers for commerce while forever changing agriculture, manufacturing and military mobilization. The search engine, on the other hand, is the respiratory system of the Digital Age and it will do all the same things, but in different ways.

Tips on buying a digital SLR camera

Digital imaging technology has improved dramatically over the past few years. Previously, all serious photographers agreed that Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLRs) could not produce the same quality and precision as conventional Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras on a dollar-for-dollar basis. ie. a $1,000 SLR camera would be far superior to a $1,000 DSLR camera.

Recently, the technology has evolved to such an extent that Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras are a great alternative for serious amateurs or professionals. You actually now get more 'bang for your buck' in that optically the lenses are equivalent and as there are less moving parts in digital cameras, you are sure to get fewer problems.

DSLR cameras have a different imaging mechanism. Whilst the viewfinder is similar to traditional cameras (optical viewfinder with shuttered mirror), exposure is completely different. Standard SLR cameras rely on mechanical or electric shutters which only allow light in during the exposure cycle, DSLR cameras use a light-sensitive sensor to capture the image. Light actually comes in all the time, but the sensor only becomes 'active' during the exposure cycle.

Most digital cameras have a LCD on the back of the camera to activate of change the camera's settings or features. You can now also use the LCD to compose the shots. Non digital cameras don't have a LCD and you will need to use the optical viewfinder to compose the photograph.

In summary, gives the best of both worlds. All the features of SLR photography, which made it so popular such as precision imaging and the ability to interchange lenses. Plus additional benefits only available on digital cameras such as immediate viewing of photographs and the ability to capture literally thousands of photographs without 'changing spools'.

That said, Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras may not be for you. These are the key questions you should ask yourself before purchasing a DSLR:

* How much can I afford to spend? It?s true that Digital cameras offer good value, but as everyone is making the switch to digital, you can usually find excellent traditional SLR cameras auctioned off on ebay for a fraction of their true value.

* Do I really need digital technology? The key benefit of digital technology is the ability to immediately see your photo. This is important if you're are a freelance news photographer, but not that relevant if you specialize in still-life shots in a studio setting

* Do I really need interchangable lenses. If not, consider a high quality non-reflex digital camera. These cameras offer all the digital advantages but come without the high price tag.

How To Select The Right Digital Camera For Yourself

Capturing moments was never so easy before digital cameras came into the photography world. Ever since, there has been a big international market dealing with digital cameras. Japan, South Korea and China have been the main players in manufacturing new digital cameras since its inception. Today, no media house can run without digital cameras. Forget media agencies, in our day-to-day life, we have started considering digital camera as a handbag's must-keep item. It has truly given a new definition to the world of photography.

Many kinds of digital cameras with different features are hovering around the market today. And you need to decide on your choices and pick up the right one that fits your clicking needs. You must have already heard a lot about the top brands such as Kodak, Nikon, Canon, Minolta, Sony, Panasonic, Polaroid, Olympus, Fujifilm, HP, Samsung, etc. This article discusses features of famous brands and models of digital cameras to help you select the right one for yourself.

To start your selection process, you must consider whether you are looking for small and compact pocket camera, an advanced camera, a high zoom capability camera, or an SLR camera. These can range from USD 100 to USD 2,000. You will need to take your pick based on your budget and requirements.

What are the features that you should compare between brands while selecting a digital camera? The most important feature is its resolution in mega pixel. In simple language, this figure tells you how much you can expand your picture without parting with its quality. The higher the resolution, the better. But this doesnt mean that you have to go for the highest available model in the market. Usually people print photos that are sized 4x6 in or 5x7 in for this any camera above 4 mega pixels will deliver great results.

Other feature that you should evaluate is zoom-in capability. Optical zoom and digital zoom are different terms. Optical zoom means actual zoom done by the lenses, while digital zoom simply increases the size of the picture display without increasing any details. In simple terms 3x optical zoom means you can get three times closer picture of the image you see with your eyes. For this reason, optical zoom is better.

The third important feature is compatibility with other devices. Find out if the camera you are going to buy is compatible with your computer, printer, memory card, USB drive, etc. Cameras have inbuilt flash memory but the space is limited, so you would have to buy external memory cards, popularly known as Secure Digital Card (SDC) and Multi Media Card (MMC).

The next important feature is the size of the screen that provides digital display of the image instantly. These screens were the major reason that digital cameras replaced conventional cameras so fast. The screen gives you the ability to review the image and delete the ones you do not like. The LCD digital camera screens are up to 3 inches in width.

Can Everyone Have LASIK Surgery?

LASIK surgery is one of the most common vision correction procedures and it is an outpatient procedure, with the treatment itself taking only minutes. LASIK surgery is performed on approximately one million eyes every year in the world and it is no different than any other surgery, but its drawbacks may be a little different than others. Whatever some people might claim LASIK surgery have risks to it, but luckily they are few and far between.

Treatment with a Laser
Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is intended to eliminate or reduce dependency on eyeglasses or contacts. Laser eye surgery has become more and more popular as the decades progress but still Laser Eye Surgery is not for everyone. The surgery procedures like PRK and LASIK are excellent alternatives to glasses and contact lenses for patients suffering from myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.

A procedure like this can permanently reshape the cornea, which is the clear covering of the front of the eye with the help of a laser. Most patients do not report any problems after the laser surgery. There are a wide variety of different optical lasers used in this procedure but common for all of them is that the laser will remove some tissue from the cornea.

Who Should not Become LASIK Patients
Patients who have reached or are close to reaching the age of 40 should consider that their vision may be affected by conditions that cannot be treated with LASIK surgery, such as presbyopia. Patients with certain medical conditions or taking certain medications should not choose LASIK surgery because of the implication that it might give. If youre pregnant or nursing you will fall out of the ideal candidate classification and better wait a little.

Patients stricken with a condition called keratoconus are ineligible for the procedure and so are patients who have high levels of refractive error. Both parties are at a slightly higher risk for post-surgical astigmatism.

Glasses
Glasses and contacts can be a hassle and especially for active people on the go. Glasses are often lost or broken and contacts can make eyes irritated if not taken care of properly. A LASIK eye surgery operation can correct your eyes once and for all and free you of glasses for life.

LASIK surgery is an extraordinary procedure that has helped thousands of people see better and is an exciting opportunity for anyone who suffers from vision problems. LASIK surgery is the preferred vision correction surgery these days, despite its high cost. This type of surgery is however generally not the best option for older patients suffering from age-related conditions. Often these conditions cant be treated with the LASIK procedure.

Digital Camera Binoculars

Many bird watchers are enthusiastic about any new binocular that guarantees the best possible view of birds in the bushes. Although man such promises remain unfulfilled as the conventional binoculars do have some limitations and that is why many bird watchers are not satisfied with the results. The trickiest part is in watching small birds hidden in thick bushes or woods. With any ordinary binocular it would be next to impossible to spot the bird, and hence it is more or less useless in such situations. But the needs of the bird watchers do not go unanswered; at least the new technology is there to help them with what they want. One such new edge product is the digital camera binocular which is precisely what the bird watchers need.

A digital camera binocular is a device that not only exceeds the conventional bird watching binocular with its amazing clarity but also helps to capture and store the image with the help of a high resolution digital camera. Not only that but these binoculars will help you shoot short video with help of the integrated digital camera while you are bird watching or doing similar activity. This is the biggest reason of making this kind of binoculars highly popular among the birdwatchers. The digital camera binoculars not only help you to watch the action up close but also to capture and store it in a digital format wherever necessary.

On size aspects, the digital camera binoculars are bit bulky due to the digital camera if compared to the conventional bird watching binoculars. But with the features it offers, the little bulk is agreed to by the birdwatchers. In the digital camera binoculars the camera is mounted in between the shafts of the binocular eyes. This helps in getting the perfect as I see it, shot while you are bird watching. Most of these digital camera binoculars dont suffer in binocularity. In fact they have the same zoom options and optical quality that you will find with any of the standard bird watching binocular. On comparing with the standard binoculars the digital camera binoculars are quiet inexpensive with the feature they offer. With the increasing popularity, many binocular manufacturers have started integrating digital cameras onto the binoculars giving the buyer more options to choose from. While you look for a new digital camera binocular, remember to compare it on the features and look for few aspects like video capture options, LCD display, image resolution, objective lens size etc. If budget is a constrain, you can decline the video capture option from your digital camera binocular and go for a still digital image capturer. In all, these binoculars have given a new high to the birdwatchers and have made them launch into the wood more often.

Choosing the Components to Build Your Own Computer

Many people now opt to build their own computer so that they are more in control of the specifications they want and save more than just a few pounds. There are a multitude of DIY's found all over the Internet, and yes, it is possible to build one yourself! But before doing so, you must choose the right components for your computer. Here are some of the very basic components you need to get:

Computer Case: Computer cases now come in a variety of designs and colours. Some now even come with a panel window where you can see the inside parts through. What is important when buying a case is that the size of the case should support the size of the motherboard. A mid-tower case is highly recommended as it has enough room for all the hardware.

Power Supply: The power supply must provide you at least 300 watts and fit right into the computer case you choose. If you are one of those who extreme users or gamers, you may want to buy a bigger power supply to feed additional cooling, USB devices and case lighting.

Processor: The processor is the most important choice you need to make in setting up your own computer. You have to know exactly what kind and how fast you need. There are a variety of options from AMD and Intel, for example: AMD Athlon, AMD Sempron, AMD Duron, Intel Celeron, Intel Core Duo, among others. If you only use the computer to surf the web, do word processing, gaming and some graphics editing, the 1.8 GHz - 2.0 GHz might be enough. Extreme gaming, 3D rendering and video editing would need at least a 2.4GHz processor.

CPU Cooler: Processors usually come with a fan and a heat sink. But it is best to get a cooler that is more efficient and quieter than the one included in the package. Remember to get a thermal compound to put onto the CPU core.

Motherboard: Choose a motherboard that matches your processor's socket type and supports the same bus speed as the CPU.

RAM: Similarly, choose a RAM that is compatible with the motherboard's bus speed. Get at least 512MB of RAM.

Hard Disk Drive (HDD): The HDD is your permanent storage for system files, applications, documents, games and so on. Get the largest hard drive capacity that you can afford. If you are on a tight budget, you can get at least a 60GB. Most motherboards have IDE slots for hard drives. Newer ones also have SATA connectors for SATA HDDs, which are quite faster than IDE HDDs.

Graphics Card: If you use the computer for regular office work, you can get a motherboard with a built-in video card. If you use it for gaming, you might want to buy a separate video card. Video cards usually use an AGP slot or a PCI Express slot on the motherboard.

Sound Card: Most motherboards have built-in sound cards which generally have good quality. If you use sound mixing or audio/video editing, you can get at least a 24-bit sound card for better quality.

CD/DVD: Of optical drives, it is best to seek for a DVD/CD-RW combo or a DVDRW; the latter is a better choice. DVDs have larger capacity to allow you to store more music and movie files and back-up data. If you do not expect to burn disks, you can opt for a CD-R or a DVD-R drive.
