Vitamin A, And How It Can Improve Your Health

Among the fat-soluble vitamins, Vitamin A is the first to be unveiled. It is a pale yellow primary alcohol that came from carotene. It usually affects the maintenance and formation of the skin, bones, teeth and mucous membrane as well as vision and reproduction.

Vitamin A is also called retinol and it is popularly known for helping the eyes adjust to light changes. This vitamin is mostly sourced from animal foods such as liver, fish liver oil, milk and other milk products, eggs and butter.

It is advisable that Vitamin A be obtained from the diet rather than from the supplements. It is because Vitamin A acquired from a varied diet provides the optimum potential of heath benefits that supplements cannot.

Vitamin A can also be found in various dark green and deep orange fruits and vegetables including carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, bok choy, turnip greens, mustard greens and romaine lettuce.

Liver is a very rich source of Vitamin A since it is chiefly stocked in the liver of animals and humans. There are also small amounts of this vitamin in most human tissues. this kind of Vitamin A is found in chemical forms dubbed as retinoids. The rest of the Vitamin A in the human and animal bodies is produced in the intestines from the beta-carotene and other carotenoids, which is abundant in many vegetables and fruits. The beta-carotene is the most active carotenoid but it is inefficiently sucked up and transformed to retinol compared to the Vitamin A that comes from animal sources. The top sources of beta-carotene include carrots, pumpkins, broccoli, apricots, spinach and collard greens, sweet potato and cantaloupe.

Vitamin A intake is unquestionably necessary to human health. If you didn't acquire the right amount of this vitamin, you will become A-deficient. This deficiency is called Hypovitaminosis A. Vitamin A deficiency can cause xerophthalmia which can lead to night blindness. Other symptoms of Vitamin A deficiency are skin dryness, susceptibility to bacterial invasion and dryness of the eyes caused by malfunctioning of the tear glands. However, sufficient amount of Vitamin A has so many health benefits.

Vitamin A is best known for promoting as well as maintaining healthy eyesight. This vitamin helps the eye's retina to function well. Vitamin A is also very significant for the veracity of the mucous membranes around the eyes.

Vitamin A is really helpful in inhibiting night blindness as well as in helping the eyes to adjust from bright light to darkness. Aside from that, eyedrops with Vitamin A are also effective in curing eye disorder specifically dry eye which is due to the tear glands' inability to secrete sufficient fluid.

Guards the body against infections like flu, colds and bronchitis. Vitamin A is also known as "the anti-infective vitamin". It plays an important role in guarding the body from infection. Vitamin A can be very valuable in fighting colds and other common infections by sustaining the healthy maintenance of the mucous membrane. This nutrient also keeps the body surfaces healthy to make them capable of attacking micro organisms. In case of chronic bronchitis, Vitamin A promotes curing of lung tissues that are damaged.

Also, Vitamin A encourages and improves many immune functions like antibody response and the activity of different white blood cells including phagocytes and T helper cells. This immune-enhancing function of Vitamin A helps heal the infected tissues of the body and boosts its resistance to infection.

Helps fight cancer. Aside from boosting the immune system, Vitamin A may also be of value in fighting breast and lung cancer as well as in escalating the rate of survival of those who are suffering from leukemia. This nutrient can also guard the body against the progression of a melanoma, a type of skin cancer that's usually malignant. Moreover, studies show that cancer patients encompassing high vitamin A intakes usally have good response to chemotherapy treatment.

Aids in normal pregnancy and fetal development. Due to its imperative role in cell development and differentiation, sufficient amount of Vitamin A helps in ensuring that the changes taking place in the cells and tissues during fetal growth normally happens.

Heals skin diseases like acne, rosacea, eczema as well as psoriasis. Studies proved that Vitamin A is necessary in achieving healthy skin

Protects the body against certain gastrointestinal problems. Vitamin A is helpful in protecting the lining of the digestive tract. Thus, it may relieve symptoms of ulcers and inflammatory bowel disease.

Promotes health of epithelial cells. This nutrient is necessary in forming healthy epithelial cells. These cells include the internal and external surfaces of the body and are located in the lungs, skin, inner ear, developing teeth, sex organs, gums, nose, sex organs, glands and their ducts, cervix and other body parts. Most epithelial cells generate mucus, which is needed to lubricate body surfaces and defend micro organisms that may attack the body.

The human body needs sufficient amount of Vitamin A daily so make sure to include Vitamin A-rich foods in your diet. If you're taking Vitamin A supplements, it must be taken with food. Some fat in your diet will improve absorption.

Halloween Activities for Young Children

Celebrate the annual Fright Night with these sixteen fun (and not so scary) ideas, especially for young children.

1. Try your hand at face painting, or allow your children to paint their own faces with washable face paints.

2. Make your own goodie bags. Set out some brown paper bags with the standard art supplies or embellish an old pillowcase with fabric paints. You can even spring for blank canvas baggies from your local discount store or craft store without spending a lot.

3. Tie dye some T shirts or socks using orange and black fabric dyes.

4. Make ghosts. Fold a piece of black construction paper in half and let your child squirt white paint inside. Squish the paint, let dry, then embellish the white ghost with paints, markers and other craft supplies.

5. Watch a Halloween movie. Make popcorn, cuddle up together in blankets, and take in some spooky cinematic sights. Harry Potter, Dracula, or Ghostbusters are great choices. For younger children, choose Heffalump Halloween, starring Winnie the Pooh or The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad by Disney Classics.

6. Eat creepy cuisine. Cut sandwiches or tortillas into Halloween shapes with cookie cutters. Create a ghoulish look with almost anything by mixing in a little green or red food coloring.

7. Play "Guess How Many Pumpkin Seeds." Each family member or party guest gets to take turns guessing how many pumpkin seeds are in a jar. The winner gets a prize.

8. Go apple bobbing. Fill a bucket or tub with water and apples and see how many apples each contestant can snag.

9. Make masks. Set out the art supplies and see who can make the scariest mask with a paper plate, construction paper, yarn, and markers or paints.

10. Create a family costume. Come up with a costume theme that the whole family can participate in. One year, we were all Star Wars characters. Maybe you will all be people from the Wild West or fuzzy forest animals.

11. Have a pumpkin seed spitting contest.

12. Roast pumpkin seeds. Clean the pumpkin seeds and toss them in just enough melted butter to lightly cover the seeds. (One tablespoon of butter is generally enough for the seeds from a medium sized pumpkin.) Salt the seeds, then spread them on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake at 250 degrees until golden brown, stirring occasionally.

13. Play Pin the Tail on the Black Cat (or Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin.) Any variation of Pin the Tail on the Donkey is fun for young kids.

14. Make a Scare Tape. Record you and your family members making spooky sounds. All you need is a tape recorder and a little imagination. Include footsteps, slamming doors, creepy howling werewolves, and crazy cackles. Play the tape from your front porch on Halloween.

15. Give each child an inexpensive disposable camera for the big night. This is a fun way to see what Halloween looks like from their perspective. I love to give my kids a blank journal and let them tell the story of memorable events, such as Halloween. This is a great tradition and really helps them to tell their personal stories, which they will cherish for many Halloweens to come.

16. Once Halloween is over, make sure to shop the post Halloween sales for fun additions to your dress up closet, which your young children are sure to enjoy year round.

Happy haunting!

Acne Program - Step 4: Adding Essential Fatty Acids To Your Diet

Getting sufficient essential fatty acids is importance in clearing acne. It's these fatty acids that help control the production of androgens - the hormones that surge during the teen-age times, which causes excess sebum oil to clog your hair follicle and contribute to creating your acne.

The three fatty acids you need daily are omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9. You need more omega 6, olive oil, than omega 3.

When you are deficient in the essential fatty acids, you will have,

A weaken immune system
Inflammatory disorders
Poor skin
Skin eruptions that won't heal
Increase sebum production causing acne
Sebaceous glands size increase

Eating essential oils is necessary to provide the right oils that are used in the sebaceous glands. These oils can come from straight vegetable oils or from oils in specific foods such as nuts and seeds.

Use flax seed oil (omega-3 oil) and olive oil (omega-6 oil) in your salad. These are the best oils to eat and are called polyunsaturated fatty acids. The other oil that is even better for you is called monounsaturated fatty acid, omega-9. This oil is found in avocados.

Most diets people have contain an excess of omega-6 oils, so mostly likely you need to concentrate on getting more omega-3 oils into your diet.

You can get omega-3 oil from,

avocados
sesame seeds
pumpkin seeds
walnuts
dark leafy green vegetables (spinach, mustard greens, kale)
wheat germ oil
salmon
sardines
albacore tuna

Or, you can take one to 4 tablespoon of flax seed oil, omega-3 oil, each day. This will give you the amount of omega-3 oil that your body needs to reduce or eliminate acne blemishes. You can add this oil to your morning cereal, soups, smoothies, salads and other liquid foods. Each tablespoon of flax seed oil contains about 100 calories.

You can get omega-6 oil from,

Flaxseed oil
Flaxseeds
grape seed oil
pistachio nuts
olives
olive oil
sunflower seeds
evening primrose oil
pumpkin seeds

Taking 2-3 tablespoons of omega-6 oil a day will give you the amount of this oil that you body needs. You can add olive oil and other oils into your salad with the flax seed oil.

You can get omega-9 oil from,

Olive oil
Avocados
Cashews
Almonds
Olives
sesame oil
pecans
pistachio nuts

Taking around 1 tablespoon of olive oil per day will give you the omega-9 oil that your body needs.

Fish Oils

In addition to supplying your diet with omega-3 and omega-6 oils, you need to supplement your diet with fish oils. Fish oil contains EPA and DHA fatty acids.

Normally, enzymes in your body break down omega-6 into EPA and DHA fatty acids.

Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)
Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA)

These two fatty acids eventually change into prostaglandins.

What are prostaglandins?

Prostaglandins are chemical hormones that come from omega-3 and omega-6 oils and that help,

regulate every function in your cells and organs.

Postaglandins also keep androgen hormones in control so that excess sebum is not produce in the hair follicle, which results in acne.

However, eating plenty essential fatty acids may not insure that you produce enough EPA and DHA, which produce the essential prostaglandins.

It is critical for acne and more importantly for your health that you get enough EPA and DHA in your cells and organs so they can produce the required prostaglandins.

To increase the prostaglandins in your cell walls, it is necessary for you to take a fish supplement, which contains both the EPA and DHA.

Of course eating salmon, halibut, and mackerel twice a week will be a plus in providing your body with more EPA and DHA.

Include at least 20% of your diet calories as good fats - omega oils and fish oil. This is essential for controlling the excess activity of your hormones and reducing the inflammation of your acne.

Keep Your Pumper Pumping

Clots cause 80% of all Heart Attacks and 83% of Strokes. Heart Disease is on the rise in this country as well as in places where the diet has been westernized like Japan and the Mediterranean. More than anything else it is due to lack of proper diet and exercise.
Atherosclerosis is the hardening of the arteries and this is how it happens; flowing through your arteries you have plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets (needed for clotting) as well as some other essential cells for your health. Due to lack of a good diet you also have things like Bad cholesterol (LDL), sugars from uncontrolled diabetes, saturated fats as well as other bad things for your health; all these negative ingredients begin to collect, stick together and build up on the interior of the artery walls; this is called plaque. The outer layer of the plaque that faces into the artery gets hard hence hardening of the arteries, the substances on the inside stays soft. The outer hard layer of the plague will eventually crack and the soft interior will be exposed. At this point the platelets (for clotting) do exactly what they are designed for; come to the crack to protect it, thinking it's an injury to the arterial wall, and form a clot; this creates even more blockage in the already narrowed artery.
Several things can begin to happen at this point, you may have various forms of chest discomfort, numbness, burning or even a dull ache. You may develop poor leg circulation, abnormally cold hands and feet, shortness of breath, high blood pressure, fluttering of the heart (palpitations), nausea, weakness or dizziness and even impotence in men. Hardening of the arteries creates a blood flow restriction. When this becomes more serious the clots can completely stop the flow of oxygen rich blood resulting in Heart Attack, Stroke and Death. It is important to reduce the risk of clot formation, but what is even more essential is to stop the production of plaque build-up in your arteries. If you make a cake it takes various minor ingredients and one major ingredient; flour, without flour you do not have a cake. When plaque is created in your arteries, it also takes one major ingredient; Bad Cholesterol (LDL). If you can stop LDL, plaque would not be formed. This is how bad LDL is created; Free-radicals are molecules or atoms that are missing an electron, they attack all kinds of cells in the body trying to steal an electron from them, free-radicals are the cause of all major disease; in the case of heart disease, free-radicals attack normal LDL cholesterol causing deformity or mutation, this makes the LDL cholesterol sticky. Now all the negative ingredients come together and you have plaque stuck to the walls of your arteries.
Free-radicals can not be avoided; they are in air and water pollution, junk foods we eat, and in medications we take; in medications these free-radicals are called side effects. Side effects can lead to disaster inside your body and in some cases death.
The only thing that stops free-radicals are antioxidants; they are molecules that have a spare electron. The only place to find antioxidants is in natural sources. Dietary supplements are needed for optimum health and contain antioxidants, eating natural foods that are un-processed is critical. Processing our food destroys the antioxidants. Most plants have around 1,000 to 1,500 antioxidants each, which does not seem like a lot compared to the amount of free-radicals you are taking into your body every single day; about a billion. Vitamins and minerals also contain antioxidants.
With the discovery of a fruit from South East Asia called the Mangosteen, scientists have been in a buzz about the amount of antioxidants this fruit contains. The Mangosteen fruit has an amazing 25,000 antioxidants. This fruit has been studied in Universities and by scientists for the last 20 years; they have proved that this fruit has the most powerful and the largest number of antioxidants in nature to date. You can read all the studies by going to (pubmed) and typing in Mangosteen. The Mangosteen fruit has been providing thousands of people with medicinal benefits, due to super charged antioxidants called Xanthones. Two hundred Xanthones have been identified in nature, 41 are in the Mangosteen fruit alone and you can compare that to the Aloe Vera plant that contains only one Xanthone. One thing about Xanthones you need to know is that they must be consumed in their natural form. Xanthones can destroy more than one free-radical at a time, unlike normal antioxidants, due to carbon bonds that produce biological actions in the body. Xanthones are stable, super charged anti-oxidants.
You will not feel the blood clots that are forming in your arteries until it is too late and a heart attack or stoke brings you down. Take care of your pumper now so that you will keep pumping for years to come.

christies in amsterdam

There are so many good lots up for auction this summer at Christies in Amsterdam. There is a lot by Petrus Paulus Schiedges called Sailing on open water that is oil on panel. This is supposed to sell for more than two thousand euros.

There is another lot up for auction at Christies that is of a busy canal near a Dutch town. It was painted by Joseph Bles. Joseph Bles was Dutch and he signed his painting J Bles. This painting should go for about fifteen hundred euros.

Albertus Verhoesen was Dutch and he painted a lovely painting called Cattle in a Sunny Meadow. The painting was created in 1845. It is up for auction in Amsterdam at Christies this summer. This painting will sell for more than twelve hundred euros.

Louis Smets was a 19th century Belgian. His painting of a horse-drawn-sled on a frozen waterway is up for auction this summer at Christies in Amsterdam. It is possible that this painting could fetch six thousand euros.

There is a nice painting by German Johann Erdmann Gottlieb called The Runaway Carriage that is dated 1844. It is one of the lots up for sale at Christies in Amsterdam. This is a rather large painting at 59.5 x 89 cm. The auction house thinks that it could sell for as much as five thousand euros.

The most expensive painting up for auction at Christies in Amsterdam this summer is called Setting Out. Setting Out was painted in the nineteenth century by Abraham Hulk. The painting is oil on canvas and it is estimated to sell for up to twenty thousand euros.

All of the top five paintings at the summer auction at Christies in Amsterdam were painted by Dutch painters. I think that I like the Jan Cossaar painting depicting playing in the snow after school better than I like the painting entitled Bollenveld by Anton Dircks. They look like they will sell for similar prices.

The oil painting of a lake in a panoramic Alpine landscape by Swiss artist Jacob Joseph Zelger is very large and very beautiful. I liked the style that he used for his creation. Christies estimates that this painting will sell for five to seven thousand euros.

There were less than twenty lots that Christies estimates will auction for less than a thousand euros. I found one of the most inexpensive paintings listed in the catalogue to be that of a clown with two yellow balls. It really did not speak to me at all and Im not surprised that it will sell for one of the smallest amounts.

I actually liked the Dutch artist Simon Maris oil painting of pumpkins, grapes and elderberries. The painting is signed and may go for as little as seven hundred euros. Simon Maris lived from 1873-1935.

Another piece of art up for auction at the Christies in Amsterdam is a lithograph printed in colors from 1978. The artist is Bram van Velde and he signed his piece in pencil. Bidding for this piece may go as high as sixteen hundred euros. This artist was very poor as a child. He first entered into an apprenticeship as a painter in 1907 in The Hague.

Another painting that is going to be auctioned off at Christies in Amsterdam this summer is a flower still life with chrysanthemums. This oil painting was painted by Willem Elisa Roelofs. He was from The Hague and his painting should go for about seventeen hundred euros.

True Facts On Arteriosclerotic Heart Disease

Arteriosclerotic heart disease is related to coronary artery disease which is the narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart.

Arteriosclerotic heart Disease is synonymous to coronary heart disease. Coronary heart disease, or coronary artery disease, is the narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. This condition results from the accumulation of fatty substance and plaque. As the coronary arteries narrow, the flow of blood to your heart slows down or stops resulting in chest pain, or angina, shortness of breath, or heart attack.

BOTH are the leading cause of death in the U.S. for both women and men alike. There are many factors which can increase the risk of arterisclerotic heart disease and some of the risks are based on family history and others are preventable. The major risk factor of heart disease may include diabetes, physical inactivity, menopause in women, obesity, tobacco use, high blood pressure, infection that cause inflammation to the artery, high cholesterol level, and many more.

The symptoms of are also similar to that of coronary heart disease. The symptoms for people with this condition may include chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, and heart attack. Angina, or squeezing pain in the chest, is the common symptom of this dangerous disease. This is the result when your heart is not getting enough blood that carries oxygen and other nutrients which the heart and other parts of the body need to function properly.

Shortness of breath is when your heart is too weak to function because of the insufficient supply of oxygen and other nutrients. If your heart is not pumping enough blood to circulate in the body, this is manifested in shortness of breath accompanied by swollen feet and ankles. In rare cases, heart attack is the first sign of the disease. This happens when the plaque build- up or blood clot stops the flow of blood to the coronary artery to the heart. The pain related with a heart attack is often severe, lasts longer than angina, and will not easily go away by resting or taking nitroglycerin.

If you suspect that you might have an arteriosclerotic heart disease, you must see a doctor right away. The symptoms you experienced will help your doctor to decide whether you will need to be tested for heart disease. If indeed you have heart disease, you will be given treatment. The treatment for coronary artery disease differs depending on the symptoms and how much the disease has developed. The common treatments include a change in your lifestyle, medications, and surgery. A change in lifestyle would mean that you have to have a proper diet which cannot increase your cholesterol level, get involved in physical activities, and lose weight.

To stay healthy and fit is not too much of a sacrifice if it's for your health, and most importantly for you to live longer. There's nothing more important than having a healthy and heart disease free life.

Best Natural Acne Treatments Ever

Finding the best natural acne treatments ever really depends on who is looking. The mistaken notion is that teens mainly fall victim to acne.

However, you may be surprised to know that 80% of adults between 25-39 suffer with acne. Some still wage the acne battle well into their forties.

The dilemma for this group of acne sufferers is that they are seeking treatment that was formulated for a younger age group. They are using treatment for their acne that was made with younger skin in mind. More oilier skin.

The more mature acne sufferer is caught out. In a way they are forced to seek alternatives in the natural arena. This is not a bad alternative.

Natural medicines are toxic free and tend to zero in on the underlying causes. While the over the counter acne medications tend to zero in on symptoms only.

It is easy for this group to find the information for themselves on the internet. And many prefer to make their own concoctions to fight their acne battle.

The most all round, versatile acne treatment is Aloe Vera. This miracle plant can stand alone when battling many of todays diseases. Acne included.

It has healing properties that are second to none. It has been known to reduce inflammation, and hold acne off from an imminent attack. So it can also prevent the spread of acne.

Aloe Vera Gel stands out as one of the best natural acne treatments we can have in our arsenal. It also mixes well with other potent natural treatments.

Although Aloe Vera can be used as a moisturizer by itself, it can also be added to most any other product.

Acne brings with it pain, irritation, and pustules. Certain healing herbs can be made into a poultice and applied to the affected areas.

A really ancient but effective treatment is the use of the leaves of the strawberry plant.

Moisten the leaves with water and put them directly on the affected areas. You can even mash up the strawberry and apply it as a paste to the face.

Dandelion is very effective in fighting acne. Use the complete dandelion plant. Root, leaves, and stem. Chop, boil, simmer and then strain the dandelion. Use the liquid as a tea and/or apply it directly to the affected areas.

The best natural acne treatments are great because like dandelion, many can be used internally as well as externally.

It is a given that when acne surfaces there are internal problems that manifest themselves externally.

A singular focus on the skin is not a wholesome way to approach acne treatment. A two pronged attack is the way to go.

A wonderful penetrative agent is Tea Tree Oil. It can go very deep into the skin and spread its antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Diet is another crucial plank. Fresh pumpkins and carrots loaded with beta carotene strengthen the immune system. Vitamins A, B complex and E uphold the integrity of the skin. Mix these with regular exercise and you are fortified against acne.
